Christmas #1: 2009

We had a wonderful first Christmas this year! We planned on having a small Christmas, but some how we ended up with a huge Christmas. My sister and her husband flew in from Boston. My mom came in from California and we all hung out at my brother's house in American Fork. It was fun seeing my sister, Bonnie. She is almost 8 months pregnant. We are all so excited for her. She is going to be such a good mommy! My mom finally got to get to know Jake. They met at the wedding, but you really can't get to know someone during the craziness of a wedding. And, Matt, Corinne and family were great hosts. We had such fun playing games, hanging out and eating LOTS of yummy food.

I still feel like a little kid when it comes to Christmas. I love all the lights, trees, presents, and music! I was so excited this year that I woke up at 5:30 a.m.. I could only contain my excitement for about 15 minutes and I just had to wake Jake up! It was a blast! I'm sad that it is all over already!

Before the Christmas season began Jake and I sat down and decided on some Christmas traditions that we want to incorporate into a little family. Here are a few that we came up with. I look forward to all the other traditions and memories that are to be made in many more Christmases to come.

Tradition #1 Christmas LIGHTS! This is more my tradition, but I love love love it! I love decking the house out in multi-colored flashing lights.

Tradition #2 Stromboli. This came from Jake's family. Stromboli on Christmas Eve.

Tradition #3 Pajamas. On Christmas Eve we get to open 1 gift....new pajamas.

Tradition #4 Ornaments. Each Christmas we get a new Christmas ornament. This year I was hoping to get a newly wed ornament, but I couldn't find any that I liked. She we ended up with a ornament with a moose on it!

Tradition #5 Carpenters Music. This for sure comes from my side of the family. We listen to Carpenters Christmas music to decorate the tree, open presents and everything in between.

Jake opening his Christmas Eve present. I put elastic on the bottom of a pair of pajamas that I had bought him randomly. He never wore them because they didn't have elastic... go figure! Now, he wears them all the time!

The Perfect Date

Jake and I have made it a goal to go to the temple once a month. And, since yesturday was date night (Friday) and the temple is closing on Monday till the new year, we decided to combine temple night with date night and it turned out to be the best date night yet!

As tradition on Fridays, I made pizza. Since I've made it so many times, I'm getting pretty dang good at it. Now, if only I could get Jake to move beyond just pepperoni and cheese! :) After we ate our scrumptious pepperoni pizza, we went to the Salt Lake Temple to do baptisms. We hadn't done baptisms since before we were married so it was a good change. When we went into the temple it was still light outside. But, when we came out it had turned dark and all the Christmas lights were on! It was magical! Temple Square during the holidays is absolutely beautiful.

And, to make this date night perfect for Jake, on our way home we made a pit stop at Cabela's.

Thanks for a great date night babe!

PS. Only 1 week left of Christmas music!!!! I'm going to be sad when I'll have to wait a whole year to listen to it again. The Christmas season goes by way too fast.

Thanksgiving 2009

This Thanksgiving Jake and I went to Florida! It was such a great vacation. This holiday also doubled as our honeymoon. When we were planning the wedding in July we decided to take our honeymoon over Thanksgiving break. I am so glad that we decided to do it when we did! Both Jake and I felt like this trip really strengthened our relationship. I now know with out a doubt that I could never live without Jake (not that I doubted it before).

The trip started with a very long flight. We had a lay over in Atlanta. When we got to our gate in Atlanta we had some time to kill. So we got settled, plugged the computer in, busted out the snacks and started playing a dice game. We came to find out that our gate had changed. It changed to a completely different concourse! Luckily, Jake saw the very small gate change announcement on to TV screen. So we hurried and packed up all of our stuff, jumped on a tram to the other concourse and finely got to our correct gate.

When we landed we found a very rainy Florida. I was beyond bummed. I had forewarned Jake that if it rained the whole time we were there, that I would cry. Well, luckily it only rained the first day. Our original plan for Wednesday was to go to Busch Gardens, but with the rain we had to change our plans. We went to the Museum of Science and Industry. It turned out to be a great solution to a rainy day. We learned about the life cycle. Saw an I-Max movie about the air force, learned about tornadoes, wild fires, and hail storms. We even stood in a hurricane with 78 MPH winds.

We were able to stay with Jake's aunt and uncle. It was really nice to get to stay with them and get to know them a little bit better. Aunt Renee' made sure that we were very well fed every night with ham, roast, yellow rice and lots and lots of cheesecake! We ate like kings and queens all week long. We also had a lot of fun playing pool and swimming in their super sized hot tub!

Thursday was Thanksgiving. We drove up to Mt. Dora to Jake's grandparents house. It was fun to meet most of Jake's family. We lounged around most of the afternoon while we waited for the whole family to show up. We had 3 turkeys! One was oven-bakes, one was smoked, and one was deep fried. I had never tried anything but oven-baked, so it was fun to try some new things. I commented to Jake that there wasn't any jello salads and he reminded me that we weren't in Utah any more ;) Thanksgiving was eaten by the pool. The weather had warmed up really nice for turkey day. After we stuffed ourselves we took a walk down to Lake Dora to try to find some alligators. We think we saw one pop its head out of the water. This my first alligator ever! I had never seen one before!

Friday was a beautiful day. We went to Busch Gardens. Busch Gardens was amazing! I can't believe that there are parks like this! It was a combination of a wild animal park and a roller coaster park. I was pretty nervous on the first roller coaster. I hadn't been on a coaster since my senior year of high school! This roller coaster was one that your feet dangle. I was a bit freaked, but after it was all over I wanted to go on another one! We also went on a roller coaster that did a negative degree drop. This coaster brought you to the very top of the first dive and hung you over the edge. Then, after you had been hanging there for a bit, it dropped you into the biggest dive you can imagine! The last coaster that we road was an old wood coaster. That was the worst ride of the whole day. I felt like my head was going to roll right off of my head! Jake felt the same way. After that we felt like we were done with rides for the rest of the night. So, we just walked around and looked at all the shops.

In between the crazy roller coasters we got to see animals of all kinds. We saw lions (who happened to be mating), elephants, zebras, hippos and of course alligators. We went on a sky tram that gave you an 360 degree view of the whole park and a safari ride that took you along a trail and then stopped on a bridge that "gave way" and sent you down a river. We spent half of the day on our own and the other half with Jake's brother Evan and his girlfriend. It was such a fun, and tiring day! We could have gone back for another day, but we were too tired after our first experience.

Saturday was spent at the beach. Since the weather wasn't really on our side, it was a little bit too cold to get in the water. So we ate our lunch on the beach and enjoyed the view. We also walked the pier and enjoyed the entertainment of some street performers. We grabbed lunch at checkers, which is Jake's favorite fast food restaurant in Florida.... They have some amazing fries!

Sunday was a really relaxed day. We went to the Hilsborough River Park. This park had it all. They had hiking trails along the river, a swimming pool (emptied for the winter), volleyball nets, and canoes to rent. I told Jake that the next time we are in Florida that we are going to have to go camping at the park.

Unfortunately on Monday we had to get on a plane back to Utah. The flight home felt even longer than the flight there. Now, its back to real life -- school and work :( There's only a week left of classes and then its finals.

"The Hobbit House"

I have to do one more post before the night is up. Jake's Dad, brother and sister came to visit from Alaska. It was a lot of fun to have them. They are officially our first guests. While Ken and Spencer staid in a hotel, Martha staid in our guest bedroom (so I guess she is actually our "first" guest). We had them for a weekend, then they went down to Vegas for the week and we had them back for another weekend before they flew out from Salt Lake City. We did a lot of fun things. If you asked the guys what their favorite thing was they would, or at least Jake, would say that his favorite thing was eating at Tacanos. Now, if you have never been to Tacanos there really is no way of explaining it except for saying a meat frenzy. Its all you can eat meat!

We also took a drive down to Moab and Arches National Park. It was fun to see all the scenery that Utah has to offer. And surprisingly, Utah has a LOT of scenery to offer. We also took a trip to Temple Square and did a guided tour of the Conference Center. I'd been inside the conference center before but I'd never done the tour. I'm learning that tours are always so much better. You always learn so much cool info! And, just a side note/vent... I was always tought that there is no such thing as a dumb question. Well, I was proven wrong by our tour guide. I asked how much the Conference Center cost to build and I was very quickly put into place that you don't ask questions like that....oops! How was I supposed to know. I was just curious! So, I came home and Goodled it. And, according to one website, the Conference Center cost 240 Million dollars to build. :) He was also a Utes fan, so when he found out that I go to BYU I think he took it upon himself to make me feel stupid or some thing.

We also took a trip through American Fork Canyon and did a long boarding trip down the Provo Canyon.

It was a lot of fun to have everyone here! And, thanks to Spencer, our house is now referred to as, "The Hobbit House"! ;0)

I think every night that Jake's family was in town we played Monopoly. Jake was very proud of this game. Check out all the property that he owns!

Birthday!

I'm a little behind on my blog writing. I just realized that I never said anything about my birthday. My birthday is October 1st, and it fell on a Thursday this year. As lame as it is to go to school on your birthday, I just don't have it in me to skip. So, I headed off to classes early. When I got home from class I got to open my birthday presents! I was so excited! Jake got me just what I wanted :) He gave me a blue North Face jacket (which is so unbelievably warm) and a Dakine backpack. After the present opening I had to go back up to campus for my last class. Class got done at 5 pm. I headed on home for my favorite meal of all times! Fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy and corn! YUM, YUM! I had asked for cheesecake instead of a birthday cake (I'm not a huge fan of cake). Jake asked around and found supposedly "the best cheesecake in Provo". It was pretty darn good too. We ended up getting cheesecake from the Provo temple. It was a raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake... so yummy! All-in-all it was a wonderful birthday.

The partying didn't stop there. My brother invited us up for a dinner get together that weekend. So we got to spend time with them and celebrate some more. We had a scrumptious dinner, dessert and some more presents.

Then, I got some fun gifts in the mail over the next week or so. I got a really nice card and picture from my fam back home in Alaska. Jake's mom sent me a really cute purse. And Jake's dad while he was in town got me an "S" shaped brownie pan. The thing is sweet! It makes brownies so that all the pieces are edge pieces! So yummy!
Here I am sporting my gifts from my hubby...
